In the shadowless light, the snow forms a blank canvas for the abstract shapes of the aspen groves. In recent years I've worked to make my wider views more abstract, to move them away from simple illustration.

Minutes later shadows formed across this scene, which complicated the shapes and made the composition unworkable.
