Zion Maple
For some, a photograph's ineluctable bond with reality makes photography a special case in the realm of the visual arts; every image is a document, an indisputably truthful rendition of the world. This is so far from the truth that I find it hardly worth considering yet it is a persistent and pernicious view. Ansel Adams wrote that, "The negative is the score and the print the performance." Every time we make an image we distort reality through every choice we make; lens, framing, fim, sensor and so on. Photographs aren't the truth, they're a transformation of reality through the hand and eye of the photographer.
Did I move the leaf? Does it matter?!
